WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The official installation ceremony of Chancellor Gary L. Miller took place Friday morning at UNCW.

Students, faculty, staff, alumni and distinguished guests from across the state attended the ceremony, which was held on the lawn of Hoggard Hall at 10:30 a.m.

“It is a great honor to serve as Chancellor of the University of North Carolina Wilmington,” Miller said. “I want to thank those that were involved in the planning of this event.”

Miller replaced Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo when she retired last June. DePaolo did not attend the ceremony; however, former UNCW Chancellor James R. Leutze was in attendance.

“Today, with great humility, I want to talk about my vision,” Miller, who is UNCW’s fourth chancellor and seventh leader, said. “My hopes and expectations for UNCW are extremely high.”

Miller explained that UNCW’s strengths are centered on three enduring values: commitment to journey, love of place, and the power of ideas and innovation.

“To be a leader, we must be able to learn and adapt,” he told the crowd. “UNCW is a university with a soul, a university on the move.”

Most recently, Miller was the vice president of Wichita State University. He graduated from the College of William and Mary in 1976 with a BA in Biology and a minor in Anthropology. In 1982, the Chancellor received his Ph.D. from Mississippi State.

The theme of Miller’s installation was Dare to Soar. “We must dare to soar,” Miller said. “We must lead in a time when great leadership is required.”

He concluded his installation speech by saying, “More than anything else, our promise to one another—our Seahawk promise—must be about our basic humanities, about our love for one another, our neighbors, this state and this great county. At UNCW, we dare to soar.”
