'Click it or Ticket' campaign celebrates 20 years

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Monday, May 20th marks the 20th anniversary of North Carolina DOT “Click or Ticket” campaign.

According to the press release, North Carolina was the first state to launch this safety program in 1993.

The release also states, The Click it or Ticket campaign runs through Memorial Day weekend and ends on June 2nd.  During this time officers will cite driver’s state wide who do not buckle up.

NHC Commissioners agree to give WAVE loan

WAVE Transit representatives say they are having a hard time paying their bills.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - WAVE Transit representatives say they are having a hard time paying their bills. Monday, New Hanover County Commissioners voted in favor of loaning the company money to hopefully keep the bus service running smoothly.

WAVE representatives said they have cash flow problems, the federal and state governments reimburse WAVE for most purchases, but the transit authority says they need the money to spend in the first place.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – One lane on Oleander Drive near South College Rd. will be closed on Wednesday, April 17 to Thursday, April 18. This closure will talk place from 9am to 4pm each day.

North Carolina DOT crews are working on the right hand turning lane heading northbound on Hawthorne Drive.

Add extra time if you are heading that way.

Cardinal Drive closure extends through the week

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – According to the city’s website, Cardinal Drive between Market Street and Eastwood Road will be closed until Thursday April, 18th.

City Crews are installing drainage pipes under the road.

This closure has been in place since April 8th. Officials had to extend the closure this week due to the rainy weather.

The website also states, residents of Long Leaf Acres and Inland Greens will have access to their property either from Market Street or Eastwood Road all week. The storm water improvements will connect with the drainage system adjacent to the Port City Community Church and help alleviate flooding in the Inland Greens neighborhood.

Wave Transit offering shuttle service to Azalea Festival Parade

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Wave Transit is offering a shuttle service for the 2013 Azalea Festival Parade in an effort to ease parking concerns, according to a news release.

Saturday, express shuttles will run for the duration of the parade from 7:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.  They will transport people who park at Independence Mall to the intersection of Second and Dock Streets. 

The shuttles will operate on 10-minute intervals throughout the day, with the last shuttle leaving downtown Wilmington at 1:30 p.m. Festival-goers who wish to stay downtown after that time can use their express shuttle tickets to take a Wave Transit bus for a ride back to the mall.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A portion of Cardinal Drive, between Market Street and Eastwood Road, will be closed to drivers on Monday, April 8th through Friday April 12th.

City Crews are installing three drainage pipes under the road. Residents of Long Leaf Acres and Inland Greens will have access to their neighborhoods from Market Street or Eastwood Road all week. 

According to the City of Wilmington press release, the storm water improvements will connect with the existing drainage system adjacent to the Port City Community Church and will help alleviate problem flooding in the Inland Greens neighborhood.

TRAFFIC ALERT: Lane Closures on I-40 and N.C. 133/ N.C.117 bridges

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - According to a press release from North Carolina DOT, Weather permitting, NC DOT crews will work on routine inspections on the I-40 and U.S. 117/N.C. 133 bridges over the Cape Fear River in New Hanover County on Monday, April 8 through Friday, April 12.

The inspections will require closures on the eastbound and westbound lanes on I-40 bridges and on the U.S. 177/N.C. 113 bridge between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. each day.

Drivers should plan for extra time crossing the bridges during that week and use caution in the area.
