Seahawks to host Ohio on opening day at Brooks Field

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Brooks Field is buzzing as baseball returns to UNCW.

The Seahawks’ three-game series against Ohio kicks off the season with a 4 p.m. start on Friday, Feb. 17.

Last season, UNCW finished with a 31-28 overall record and 18-12 in the CAA. Head Coach Mark Scalf’s team landed in third place in the conference and made its 26th consecutive CAA tournament appearance.

Thomas Pope led the team with a batting average of .396 and .488 on-base percentage, according to UNCW season statistics. Matt Campbell had the most hits, 86, and Hunter Ridge totaled 53 runs scored for the Seahawks. All three of the leaders return to the field for the 2012 season.

Due to expected heavy rain in Sunday’s forecast, Ohio and UNCW will play a doubleheader on Saturday, starting at noon, according to a news release from UNCW Athletics.

All of the games in the series are expected to be video streamed for free at UNCWsports.com.

Students lured to UNCW basketball game with free hot dogs

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – UNCW students were sent a direct invitation from the head of the Department of Athletics to attend this weekend’s men’s basketball game.

Athletics Director Jimmy Bass sent an email invitation to all of the students encouraging them to be in Trask Coliseum at 7 p.m. on Saturday when the Seahawks host rival George Mason.

As a bonus, the school is offering a free hot dog and chips to each student who arrives after 6 p.m., while supplies last. Tickets are available through Friday at Sharky’s in the Fisher Student Center. According to Bass, when the 1,200 student ticket allotment is completely picked up, all tickets will then be $15 for students at the door.

He also thanked the Seahawk student body for its support during the Homecoming victory over William & Mary last weekend.

“Your energy is palpable in Trask as the players and season ticket holders feed off of your passion and join with you to create a distinct home court advantage,” he wrote in the email.

VIDEO: Fans take sledgehammer to UNC, Duke painted Suburban

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Local UNC and Duke fans took out their frustrations with a sledgehammer prior to the highly-anticipated men’s basketball game on Wednesday.

Buffalo Wild Wings® Grill & Bar hosted a rivalry car bash with ESPN Radio WMFD AM 630 in order to raise money for the Brigade Boys & Girls Club of Wilmington and to get fans pumped about the Tar Heels vs. Blue Devils game.

Supporters were able to donate a minimum of $1 per swing to take a sledgehammer to a retired ESPN Chevrolet Suburban that was decorated in each of the team’s colors.

“The Carolina and Duke rivalry has always been an exciting part of the sports culture all over North Carolina,” stated Adam Webb, Buffalo Wild Wings Marketing and Promotions Director in Wilmington, in a news release. “We thought it would be great to have some fun with the fans here in Wilmington while raising money for a wonderful organization. This will be an opportunity to finally find out which Tobacco Road team has more supporters in Wilmington and for our community to give back in the spirit of some friendly competition.”
