New portion of Cross-City Trail to open Friday near UNCW

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A new portion of the Gary Shell Cross-City Trail will open after a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, May 18 at 3 p.m.

A 170-foot bridge and boardwalk that spans the headwaters of Bradley Creek at the end of Teal Street, near UNCW, will connect the College Acres neighborhood with the Autumn Hall development, according to City of Wilmington spokesperson Malissa Talbert.

The next section of the trail—which will run from the bridge through Autumn Hall and connect to the trail on Eastwood Road—is expected to be under construction from the summer until the end of the year.

Golf, comedy fundraisers to be held for memorial honoring firefighters

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A golf tournament and comedy show will soon be held in honor of fallen firefighters in Wilmington and those lost on 9/11, according to a press release from a spokesperson on behalf of the Wilmington Fire Department Memorial.

For the first time ever, members of the Wilmington Fire Department will team up with local businesses to host the HomeTown Heroes Golf Classic.

The golf classic will have a firefighter or “hometown hero” in each group of four. Individual teams of five will compete in a captain’s choice tournament for prizes.

The golf tournament will be held Monday, May 21 at 9 a.m. at the Wilmington Municipal Golf Course, and sponsors will also receive tickets to the Marion Karr Comedy Show.

Over 1,800 Seahawks graduate at Trask Coliseum

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Four graduation ceremonies were held for an estimated 1,826 undergraduate, 242 graduate and six doctoral UNCW students on Friday and Saturday.

A total of 47 student-athletes walked across the stage at Trask Coliseum during the spring 2012 commencement ceremonies.

Chancellor Gary Miller spoke at the events, along with several of the school's professors.

Here's a list of the student-athletes who graduated, provided by the UNCW athletics department:

  • Baseball – Andrew Cain (Business Marketing), Ryan Leach (Business Accounting), Tyler McSwain (Community Health), Thomas Pope (Business Management and Leadership)
  • Men’s Basketball – Cam Chambers (Business Finance)
  • Women’s Basketball – Theresa Jackson-Henderson (Community Health)

NASCAR star to help open up new outlet store in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A famous NASCAR driver will help open up the new Ollie's Bargain Outlet store in Wilmington next week.

Kasey Kahne will meet with 250 fans on Wednesday, May 9th during a store promotion.

Here's how it is going to work. Starting at 7:30 a.m. store employees will start handing out one ticket per person on a first come, first served basis. At 10 a.m., those with tickets can meet Kasey and get a picture and one autograph.

The store is located at 352 South College Road in the University Shopping Centre.
