Sign up for the Midnite Madness 5k at UNCW

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Midnite Madness is just around the corner, and this year at 5K event will help kickoff the college basketball season.

Registration is open of the Midnite Madness 5K event on October 12. Proceeds from this race will benefit student-athlete scholarships at UNCW.

The Sammy C. Hawk and the UNCW spirit squads will be along the race route cheering on participants.

Here’s a breakdown of the registration fees:

Pre-Registration: $30
Starting September 29: $35
UNCW Students Pre-Registration: $20
UNCW Students Starting September 29: $25
(UNCW Students must show Student Id when picking up race packet)

YWCA to celebrate grand re-opening of its pool bubble

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The YWCA will celebrate the opening of its refurbished pool bubble Monday during a grand re-opening celebration event.

According to a press release, the YWCA has planned a pool party and ribbon cutting ceremony with Cape Fear Memorial Foundation Chairman W. Carter Mebane III.

The YWCA was able to replace the bubble’s liner this summer with funds from the Save the Bubble Campaign.

 “We are excited to put the bubble up on September 15,” said Aquatics Director Lance Tate. “None of it would have been possible without the generosity from Cape Fear Memorial Foundation and our members.”

Vikings improve 4-0 on the season in week 4

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Super Six poll of week 4 was No. 2 Hoggard playing host to No. 3 South Columbus Friday night.

Both the Stallions and Vikings went into the game undefeated and Hoggard was looking to make back-to-back wins against South Columbus.

The Vikings led the 2nd quarter 7-0 and ended the half with a 21-0 lead. They continued to dominate in the second half, winning 38-0.

Vikings improve to 4-0 on the season.

Hoggard has Friday off as South Columbus hosts West Bladen.

Vikings improve record to 2-0

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Hoggard Vikings were the first to  jump on the score board this weekend in week two of the high school football match ups.

The Vikings hosted 71st and dominated most of the game.

The Hoggard football team improved its record to 2-0 with a 38-6 win over 71st.

UNCW Surf Team Scholarship goes to rising senior

UNCW Surf Team Scholarship goes to rising senior

WILMINGTON NC (WECT) – Romy W. Sidelsky has been awarded the UNCW Surf Team Scholarship for the 2012-13 academic year, according to a report on easternsurf.com.

Sidelsky is a senior from Atlantic Beach and is majoring in marine biology at the university. She has been an active member of the UNCW Surf Club and Team since 2009.

Team Coach Dr. Dylan McNamara said the scholarship stands for a high level of academic achievement for one of the region’s accomplished surfers.

According to the report, the UNCW Surf Team Scholarship was created in late 2011.
