Free screening exams scheduled soon for NHC student athletes

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Free athletic screening exams will be offered soon to athletes and cheerleaders who attend school in New Hanover County, according to a school system spokesperson.

All students who plan to participate in athletics or cheerleading during the 2013-2014 school year are required to undergo a screening examination, per the state’s requirements.

Exams for girls will take place Thursday, May 23 at the following locations:

6 p.m.

  • Williston
  • Holly Shelter
  • New Hanover
  • Myrtle Grove
  • Roland-Grise
  • Hoggard

The annual event raises awareness against gender-based violence.

Now, WECT is now sending text alerts with the final scores straight to your phone.

UNCW's softball team gets into the 'Harlem Shake'

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Members of the UNCW softball team are joining in the “Harlem Shake” fun.

They created their own version of the dance in an effort to get their name out in the community.

The Seahawk softball team is trying to raise the fan count at many of its games this year since it is starting the season fresh with half of a new team and new coaches.

Tennis courts get makeover, new cabanas

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Althea Gibson Tennis Complex at Empie Park is better than ever after some recent renovations.

Eight of the 19 tennis courts were resurfaced and two shaded cabanas were installed. Four of the resurfaced courts have additional lines to help younger players learn the game of tennis.

Wilmington Tennis Ladder donated the cabanas valued at $4,500.

The resurfacing project cost $30,000. It was paid for by grants totaling $20,000, a $5,000 donation and the City of Wilmington provided $5,000.

Final deadline to apply for 'Biggest Loser' competition

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Today is the deadline to apply for a spot in a local “Biggest Loser” competition.

Anita Harrell, owner of Fitness Motivation, has invited those who are obese to come to her studio to apply for a spot in the challenge.

"This challenge isn't for someone who wants to lose 20 pounds," said Harrell. "It's for people who have gone off the tracks with their fitness. It's for people who need large-scale weight loss in their life."

Six applicants will be selected to win 12 free weeks of personal training. Those selected will be working out with Anita five to seven days a week.

Applications must be turned in by February 11. The program will start at the end of February.

Ribbon cutting held for Holly Tree Elementary's new track

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Years of fundraising from parents, teachers and students all came together Tuesday at a ribbon cutting for Holly Tree Elementary School’s new track.

The school's P.T.A. worked to raise about $33,000 for the project.

The first plan for it came up a few years ago, when parents wanted to remember the lives of two students named Bryson Parry and Jacob Hatten, both of whom died in 2009.
