Informational meeting for Marine Science Academy tonight

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – There will be an informational meeting for parents and students next week about the Ashley High School Marine Science Academy.

The new program provides a unique college-level experience by offering the equivalent of two introductory marine science courses usually taken during the first college year.

According to the New Hanover County School System, the Academy will prepare the next generation of marine scientists through:

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Engineers and scientist from local industries will visit with students Thursday in at O’Dell Williamson Auditorium on the campus of Brunswick County Community College.

Students from all five Brunswick County high schools, BCC and UNCW will be at the event to learn more about the science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields.

There will be presentations, interactive sessions and lunch at the event, which takes place Thursday, April 18 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Four teams from New Hanover County Schools will advance to the 2013 Southeast State Science Olympiad Competition. Nearly 800 students recently competed in the regional event at UNCW.

The following schools won trophies for overall team scores and will advance to the State Science Olympiad Tournament on April 26-27, 2013, at N.C. State University in Raleigh:

 Division B (Middle School)

  • 1st place- Roland-Grise Middle School

Division C (High School)

  • 1st place- Hoggard High School
  • 2nd place- Isaac Bear Early College High School
  • 4th place- Laney High School

According to New Hanover County Schools, 14 students were awarded a combined total of $10,500 in scholarships.

Burgaw Middle School comes in 5th place at science competition

BURGAW, NC (WECT) – Burgaw Middle School’s Science Olympiad team recently came in fifth place overall at the Regional Science Olympiad competition held at UNCW.

According to the Pender County Schools website, about 1,000 middle and high school students from 36 schools and five southeastern NC counties participated in the event.

The BMS team ranked among 23 schools and qualified for the state tournament in Raleigh in April.

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Five Pender County students recently took home awards at the Regional Science Fair, which was held at UNCW.

According to the Pender County Schools website, the following students took home their respective awards:

The 2013 Regional Science Fair was held on February 9, 2013, at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington. 

More than 14 different school districts, as well as various private schools, were represented at the fair.

This year, 75 awards and special awards were presented to the approximately 180 students who participated.
