WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - It was a frenzy at Fanboy Comics Saturday where nearly 10,000 free comics were handed out to comic book lovers.

The freebies were part of Free Comic Book Day, which is a national event aimed at getting people interested in the stories and superheroes of the comics.

Fanboy Comics has participated in the day for 13 years.

Owner Thomas Gilbert said this year's event is the biggest yet. He told us with the filming of Iron Man 3 in Wilmington, he's seeing more interest in comics. Gilbert said that his business has been busy with people eager to learn more about Tony Stark.

In the week before the movie debuted, Gilbert said he has seen a huge surge.

"We can't keep Iron Man t-shirts anymore," he said. "We've had people come in this week to buy Iron Man shirts to wear at the movies."

Gilbert says that movies like Iron Man 3 have revitalized the love for comic books.
