More than 1,000 turn out for Heart Walk despite bridge closure

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The bridge closure caused dozens of people not to participate in this year's heart walk Saturday, but regardless, the turnout was still large.

About 1,700 took part in the event with raises money to fight heart disease and stroke, which are the number one and number four killers of many Americans.

"Heart disease is the number one killer of men and women," said Ashley Miller with the American Heart Association. "So, so many people are affected. People like to come out in memory or in honor of someone or celebrate their survival."

The Heart Walk took place at the athletic field on UNCW's campus.

Organizers say 50 to 100 people sent donations in the mail and decided not to head into Wilmington because they were concerned about traffic.
