The New Hanover County Registrar is warning about a possible scam involving deed retrieval.

NEW HANOVER CO., NC (WECT) - The county registrar is warning people about what officials are calling a potential deed scam.

"It's come to my attention that a private company is soliciting property owners in North Carolina and offering to obtain, on their behalf, a copy of their deed or property profile for $86," said Jennifer MacNeish in a news release.

The requests come via mail from Deed Retrieval Services, which has a return address in Raleigh. Along with the charge of $86, the notice also shows that there will be an additional $35 service fee if the homeowner doesn't respond within the indicated time.

All deeds for property located in New Hanover County are recorded and maintained at the Register of Deeds Office and only the Registrar's Office can issue certified copies of these records.
