UNCW Press Release
GREENVILLE, South Carolina – Jack Ward and Nathaniel Goodwin scored goals to back a solid defensive effort as UNCW blanked rival College of Charleston, 2-0, in men's soccer action on Sunday at the Stone Soccer Stadium.
The Seahawks evened their record at 2-2-1 with the non-conference win at the Diadoa/Spinx Invitational hosted by Furman. The Cougars, winners of their last two outings, dropped to 3-2-0 with the shutout loss.
UNCW sophomore Brandon Bolen needed to make just two saves to pick up the win. The Seahawks allowed 14 shots, but just two on frame.
Ward netted UNCW's opening goal in the 19th minute when he was able to take advantage of a CofC defensive miscue. A Cougar defender tried to clear the ball, but Ward picked up the errant clear and fired a one-timer past CofC goalkeeper Kees Heemskerk, who finished with three saves.
UNCW doubled its lead in the 65th minute on a strike from Goodwin, a freshman making his first start of the season. After gaining possession following a Cougar foul, freshman Jose Garcia sent a free kick into the box where Goodwin headed home his first career goal.
The win gave the Seahawks a 2-1-1 mark against the Southern Conference overall and a 1-1-1 record against teams picked to finish in the top three of the league. UNCW posted wins against Appalachian State and Charleston, dropped a 4-2 decision to league favorite Furman on Friday and fashioned a 2-all draw against UNC Greensboro in the season opener.
The Seahawks host their eighth annual UNCW Hilton Garden Inn Classic next weekend at the UNCW Soccer Stadium. Appalachian State takes on Binghamton at 5 p.m. on Friday followed by Saint Mary's (Calif.) and the Seahawks at 7:30 p.m.
Saint Mary's provides another stern test for the Seahawks. The Gaels reached the quarterfinals of the 2011 College Cup before being eliminated by eventual national champion UNC Chapel Hill.
