UNCW Press Release
WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Three different Seahawks got on the score sheet as the UNCW women's soccer team tallied a 3-0 shutout over Charlotte Friday night at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
The Seahawks notched their first win of the season by using constant defensive pressure and maintaining possession for the majority of the contest. The Seahawks, now 1-2-1, played three consecutive top-25 opponents to open the season.
The 49ers, meanwhile, dropped to 2-2-0 after losing their second straight match.
The scoring started in the seventh minute as sophomore midfielder Stephanie Bronson played senior midfielder Kim Currie into space down the right flank and Currie outran her defender before lacing a strong long-distance shot past Charlotte keeper Annika McHenry into the upper left corner.
The 49ers nearly got back on level terms one minute later as UNCW senior keeper Caitlin Hunter denied Charlotte twice in front of the goal mouth before wrangling up a loose ball in her own 18-yard box, allowing the Seahawks to take a 1-0 margin into intermission.
The 49ers continued to get pushed deeper into their third of the field in the second half as UNCW upped its offensive pressure. Freshman midfielder Morgan Leyble laced a 25-yard free kick at 55:24 to push the score to 2-0.
UNCW, which owned an 18-6 advantage in shots and had 12 corner kicks, added an insurance goal in the 64th minute. The Seahawks found themselves on a break down the right side and Leyble played a cross to the back post. Junior midfielder Nicole Costa then headed the ball into the left corner for her first career goal at 63:47.
Hunter turned back five Charlotte shots to record her second shutout of the season and the ninth clean sheet of her career. McHenry collected seven saves for the 49ers.
The Seahawks have a quick turnaround before entertaining Davidson on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
