More than 2,000 new students move into UNCW Saturday

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Hundreds of volunteers were on the UNC Wilmington campus Saturday morning to help new students move into their new homes away from home.

Saturday kicked off the start of move-in weekend at UNCW for incoming freshman. 

The university estimates more than 1,900 volunteers were on campus to welcome the students and their families. The volunteers acted as an assembly line, helping students unload and carry belongings to their dormitories.

UNCW provided the following list of facts about the Class of 2016:

  • 85 percent reported UNCW as their first-choice university
  • 29 percent were in the top 10 percent of their high school graduating class
  • 84 percent attended public high schools
  • Just over 2,000 admitted out of 12,500 applications
  • 16.9 percent are from diverse ethnic backgrounds
  • They are from 712 high schools, 91 NC counties, 41 US states and 27 countries
  • Top NC counties: Wake, Mecklenburg, New Hanover, Guilford, Union and Forsyth
