BLACKSBURG, Virginia – Junior Shannon Mayrose scored in the 102nd minute to break a scoreless tie and lift No. 22 Virginia Tech to a 1-0 victory over UNCW in collegiate women's soccer action at the Hilton Garden Inn Hokie Invitational Friday at Thompson Field.

Both teams return to action Sunday at the Hokie Invitational. The Seahawks take on No. 3 Wake Forest at Noon before the Hokies entertain Richmond in the tournament finale at 2:30 p.m.

"It's very disappointing to lose in double overtime," said UNCW Head Coach Paul Cairney. "It was a quality finish from Virginia Tech that won it, but it's still a tough loss to swallow. Our team played hard and played together. We created some decent chances and against ACC opponents, you have to capitalize. The result is not what we wanted, but I am very proud of our performance tonight."

In the season opener for both schools, Mayrose tallied the decisive marker when she headed home a cross from freshman Jordon Conklin at the 101:29 mark of the contest.

Mayrose also had the best chance during regulation, but her shot attempt in the 11th minute found the crossbar.

VT held a 16-6 advantage in shots taken in the contest, including a 4-0 edge in overtime. Senior Amanda Holmes recorded two shots to lead the UNCW attack while junior Nicole Costa and freshmen Lindsey Byrne, Maddie McCormick and Allison Stearns all finished with one shot apiece.

Senior Caitlin Hunter got in start in goal for the Seahawks and finished with six saves. Caroline Kelly finished with four stops for the Hokies.
