Volleyball tournament raises money for firefighter memorial

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Wilmington firefighters are raising money for a new memorial one serve at a time.

A volleyball tournament took place Saturday afternoon at Capt'n Bills on Market Street. There was also a raffle and a moon bounce for kids to play on. All of the proceeds will go towards the memorial. It will house steel from one of the World Trade Centers and have seven monuments, representing each Wilmington firefighter lost in the line of duty.

"There hasn't been anything built yet that is specifically for Wilmington firefighters," said Rodney Lester, a firefighter. "This will give us an opportunity to honor the firefighters that have come and gone. And memorialize the ones that were lost in the line of duty."

Lester says they hope to dedicate the land for the new memorial this September and hopefully have the project completed by September 2013.
