WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Adell Harris was officially introduced as the new women's basketball coach at UNCW during a press conference on Thursday afternoon.
"I'm not too cool to say this is the greatest moment of my life, to this point," said Harris. "I don't want to be mediocre and I don't want to be average."
The High Point, N.C. native just completed her third season at Tusculum College, which was her first head coaching job.
She took the Pioneers to a 61-30 overall record over three seasons, leading the program to back-to-back South Atlantic Conference championships and three trips to the NCAA Division II Tournament.
"To my players, I just want to say I'm so excited," said Harris. "I'm going to love everything about you, even your weaknesses."
UNCW senior Chelsea McGowen played under Harris as a member of the 2009-10 team. McGowen averaged 2.1 points and 1.7 rebounds in guiding the Pioneers to a 23-10 overall record and an NCAA Division II Tournament Elite Eight appearance.
Harris will bring assistant coach Ross Jolly with her from Tusculum. Jolly, who's sister Kelly is the head coach at NC State, will serve as Harris's third assistant.
Prior to taking over at Tusculum, Harris spent time at UNC-Asheville, where she was associate head coach during her final two seasons. In her first UNCA season, the Bulldogs posted a 19-9 record and finished second in the Big South Conference standings. UNCA's 19 victories were a 16-win improvement from a season before (3-25).
Harris played her collegiate career at Wake Forest University, where she led the Demon Deacons with 108 assists during her senior season, while also serving as team co-captain.
Head coach Cynthia Cooper-Dyke resigned her UNCW post to become the next head coach at Texas Southern University in early April. Director of Athletics Jimmy Bass narrowed the search down to Harris and interim head coach Jimmy Garrity earlier this week.
"These young women represent UNCW every day, in a very tremendous way," Bass said prior to introducing Harris.
