WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Controversial abortion t-shirts sold at UNCW ignited a protest on Monday.
Jennifer Baumgardner's "I Had an Abortion" t-shirts were sold in the school's Fisher Student Center during a "Stories of Choice" panel about the rights and experiences of abortion.
Proceeds from the sale will go to Soapbox Inc., a group formed by Baumgardner and fellow author/activist Amy Richards.
The panel of women—who were hosted by the LGBTQIA Resource Office and the Women's Studies and Resource Center—held a question and answer session about abortion during the public event. Baumgardner also had a book signing for her "I Had an Abortion" project.
The same groups will hold an "Abortion Speak Out" event on Tuesday, April 17 from 4 until 6 p.m. at the Port City Room in the Fisher University Union.
There will reportedly be a showing of the film "The Abortion Diaries" and an event "encouraging women to speak about their experiences with abortion," according to LGBTQIA Coordinator Amy Schlag.
