Yard sale planned to help house fire victim

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) — A house fire on Dean Drive in Wilmington left Ruth Bomhan with practically no possessions and a home that is completely unlivable.

Kristina Mercier, a Roland-Grise Middle School co-worker and friend, is hosting a benefit yard sale for Bomhan on Saturday, July 30 to help replace some of her household items and her teaching materials.

The yard sale will be held at the Church of the Servant, located at 4925 Oriole Drive, next to College Park Elementary School, from 7:30 a.m. until noon.

Two New Hanover County youth attend 4-H Congress

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) — Two New Hanover County 4-H youth attended the 2011 State 4-H Congress, held July 18-21, in Raleigh at N.C. State.

More than 500 4-H’ers, volunteer leaders and North Carolina Cooperative Extension reportedly attended. According to Terri Leith, New Hanover County was represented by Kevin Artz, 15, and Robert Shivers-Perry, 16.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) — The Board of Directors of the Wilmington Housing Authority will meet on Monday, July 25 at the following times:

  • Housing & Economic Opportunities, Inc. Board of Directors, 4 p.m.
  • Wilmington Housing Authority Board of Commissioners, 4:30 p.m.

Both meetings will take place at the Wilmington Housing Authority, located at 1524 S. 16th St.

CFPUA bills to be upgraded in mid-July

CFPUA bills to be upgraded in mid-July

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) — Your Cape Fear Public Utility Authority bills are about to change.

According to a news release, bills will be reformatted to be easier to read beginning in mid-July. New features, like a graph for current and previous usage, will be included.

Basic account information like the current amount due, past due, due date, CFPUA charges and Wilmington charges will still reportedly be included.

UPDATE: Officials say fatal fire was accidental

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A man was killed Wednesday afternoon when a house caught fire on Charter Drive in Wilmington.

Investigators determined the cause early Wednesday night.

Fire officials ruled the fire to be accidental.

They say it was caused by improperly discarded smoking material.

Damage estimates are $175,000 structural and $50,000 to contents.

According to David Hines with the fire department, more than 30 firefighters from the city and county battled the flames which sparked around 1:30 p.m.  Hines said they were able to knock out the fire within 15 minutes.

Danny Miller, 66, was killed in the fire.

The Wilmington Police Department is investigating the official cause of death to determine if a crime was committed. The SBI arrived shortly after 3:00 p.m. to assist in the investigation.

Charter Drive was blocked off in both directions into the early evening Wednesday.
