TreeFest: Pick up a seedling from Independence Mall

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – We lose thousands of trees each year to disease, development and storm events.  Trees are important to help improve our air and water quality, lower energy costs and remove carbon dioxide from the air.

Area residents can pick up five tree seedlings from the JC Penny entrance of Independence Mall to take home and plant on their property.

TreeFest will distribute the seedlings Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.  Organizers are suggesting a $3 donation per household to help ensure the event can return next year.

Available tree species include:  Atlantic white cedar, Bald cypress, Black gum, Black walnut, Crabapple, Crape myrtle, Flowering dogwood, Eastern red cedar, Eastern redbud, Live oak, Longleaf pine, Mockernut hickory, Persimmon, River birch, Southern red oak, Wax myrtle, White oak and Willow oak.

The trees need to be kept moist and planted as soon as possible.  Organizers said winter is a great time to plant trees in our area.

Natural gas leak repaired, traffic back to normal

Natural gas leak repaired, traffic back to normal

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A natural gas line that ruptured around lunch time and caused parts of Eastwood Road to be closed has been repaired.

According to David Hines with the Wilmington Fire Department, construction crews scrapped the gas line and caused the leak while moving a trench box.

Crews closed Eastwood Road from Military Cutoff Road to Rogersville Road because of the 6" ruptured gas line. Hines said the leak was significant. Rogersville Road remained open during the incident, but the Eastwood Road entrance into Mayfaire was not accessible.

No citation was issued and no injuries were reported.
