Civil rights documentary to air in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A civil rights documentary is showing in Wilmington for one night only.

Kimberly McLaughlin-Smith, who works in the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion at UNCW, is helping host a screening of Free Angela and All Political Prisoners at Carmike Cinemas.

It's about Angela Davis, a University of California philosophy professor, who became a civil rights activist icon in the late 1960's.

The movie starts at 7:00p.m. on Thursday, May 16, and there will be a discussion on civil rights afterwards.

The Wilmington Community is invited to the hybrid performance SPIN

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Wilmington community and surrounding areas are invited to see the inspiring story of Annie Londonderry who was the first woman to travel around the world on a bicycle.

According to a press release, UNCW Presents and Thalian Hall have made it possible to see a hybrid consisitng of theatre, spoken word poetry, and part documentary performance on the Thalian Hall Main Stage. 

The hybrid is called Evalyn Parry's Spin, Starring the Bicycle. 

In the performance, Parry introduces the idea of how the bicycle created a social change in the 19th century. The bicycle will be used for the whole performance with many roles as the prop for storytelling and as a physical musical instrument. 

According to a press release, Spin,  was nominated for a 2011 Canadian Folk Music Award, and the Toronto Star says "Whatever, it is, it's brilliant."

UNCW's cultural arts presents pianist Norman Bemelmans' concert

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The University of North Carolina Wilmington's Office of Cultural Arts presents Pictures at an Exhibition, a piano concert by Norman Bemelmans.

The concert will explore an eloquent connection between the visual and performing arts during his piece. Bemelmans will perform a concert with works by Mussorgsky, Debussy and Liszt on April 2 at 8 p.m. in Kenan Auditorium.

Mayor Saffo joins 4th-graders on field trip

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo joined fourth-graders from Winter Park Elementary Wednesday for a tour of the historic Burgwin-Wright House in downtown Wilmington.

The museum is a designated field trip for fourth grade students in New Hanover County.

The mayor took part in this field trip when he was a youngster and shared some of his memories from that visit with students Wednesday. Saffo will also talk about the importance of historic preservation.

The Burgwin-Wright House and its adjacent kitchen are fully furnished, offering students a vivid experience of life in colonial Wilmington.

UNCW creates special commemoration for the 9/11 anniversary

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - More than 1,500 students, faculty and staff from UNCW gathered last year to create a special memorial in commemoration of the anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy.

They came together in formation to represent the twin towers and the pentagon and held up the name of a victim of the terrorist attacks.

Even though the event took place last year, the video is circulating again to honor of all those who lost their lives and the first responders and veterans who continue to serve the United States.

According to UNCW, the unique event was created and organized by students. Watch their work in the video above.
