New Hanover Regional Medical Center EMS to offer free CPR lessons

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Paramedics with New Hanover regional Medical Center EMS will be offering free hands-on CPR lessons during National CPR & AED Awareness Week, according to a news release.

The lessons will take about 10-15 minutes and will educate residents on the important role bystanders play in saving a cardiac arrest victim's life.

Paramedics will be located at the Kohl's Department Store parking lot Friday, June 7 from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m.

WPD adds AED to patrol cars in an effort to save lives

The Wilmington Police Department is adding new equipment to their patrol vehicles in an effort to save lives.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The Wilmington Police Department is adding new equipment to their patrol vehicles in an effort to save lives.

Since police officers are often the first responders in an emergency situation, the department spent about $9,000 to buy seven AEDs for patrol cars, according to their Facebook page.

The Red Cross trained officers how to use the devices.

The police department said they hope to AEDs in all cars, but said they will need to raise th rest of the money through partnership and grants.

Gear up for the 2nd annual Run, Ride & Roll event

Gear up for the 2nd annual Run, Ride & Roll event

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The 2nd annual Gary Shell Cross-City Trail Run, Ride & Roll event will take place this Saturday.

Everyone is invited to walk, run, bike, roller skate, or rollerblade along the Cross-City Trail.

Participants will meet at Empie Park and ride the Cross-City Trail to Halyburton Park and back to Empie Park. A shuttle will be available at Halyburton Park for those who would like a shorter route.

According to a press release, activities include a Cross-City Trail scavenger hunt, a trick-your-bike competition, bicycle safety, live music, health screenings, vendors and other activities. 

There will be a drawing for prizes and prizes will be given to winners of the scavenger hunt and the trick-your-bike competition.

Big Church gives in big way

Big Church gives in big way

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - One of the largest churches in South Eastern North Carolina is donating to the victims of the Oklahoma tornados with a very sizable donation. Port City Community Church is donating $10,000 to the Summaritan's Purse.

The church shared a link on its Facebook page that explains how the church is responding: pray, send money, and send people.
