Locally-filmed movie to play for audience at UNCW

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Moviegoers will have a chance to watch locally-filmed movie Mary and Martha.

ONE, a global organization that is fighting poverty and preventable disease (www.ONE.org), is teaming up with HBO to present the movie at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15 at UNCW's Randall Library second floor auditorium.

The movie was filmed on location in Wilmington last year.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A couple that said their “I do’s” at a Free Comic Book Day event in Wilmington one year ago returned to celebrate the anniversary of their unusual nuptials on Saturday.

Last year, Adam Mason and Donnita Johnson had a quick, almost impromptu wedding ceremony at Fanboy Comics.

The wedding was complete with a Princes Leia bridesmaid, a Spiderman best man and Batman and Wonder Woman wedding rings. The pair dressed up in Batman and Wonder Woman attire for the ceremony.

Time running out to vote to bring movie stars to UNCW

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – UNC Wilmington Seahawks don't have much time left to win a chance at having actors Seth Rogen and Craig Robinson come to campus.

The website Eventful is hosting a contest for the celebs to show up at the college with the most online demands as part of an advanced screening of the comedy This is the End, which will hit theaters in June.

The contest ends Thursday, and currently, UNCW is in second place, only behind the University of California, Santa Barbara.

'Revolution' wraps production for season

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Star sightings in Wilmington are going to become less common. That's because NBC’s Revolution has wrapped production.

Saturday night, the cast and crew celebrated at a wrap party at Ten Pin Alley.

Film permits from the city show the last two shoots were at Bijou Park and the Water Street Parking Deck.

The Wilmington Community is invited to the hybrid performance SPIN

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Wilmington community and surrounding areas are invited to see the inspiring story of Annie Londonderry who was the first woman to travel around the world on a bicycle.

According to a press release, UNCW Presents and Thalian Hall have made it possible to see a hybrid consisitng of theatre, spoken word poetry, and part documentary performance on the Thalian Hall Main Stage. 

The hybrid is called Evalyn Parry's Spin, Starring the Bicycle. 

In the performance, Parry introduces the idea of how the bicycle created a social change in the 19th century. The bicycle will be used for the whole performance with many roles as the prop for storytelling and as a physical musical instrument. 

According to a press release, Spin,  was nominated for a 2011 Canadian Folk Music Award, and the Toronto Star says "Whatever, it is, it's brilliant."

UNCW's Department of Theatre partners with New Paradise Laborartories to present PROM

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Department of Theatre at UNCW has partnered with New Paradise Laboratories to present a unique play called PROM. PROM fuses together two popular rituals, the football game and the formal dance.

According to a press release, UNCW's theatre department Professional Partner Program extended residency with NPL to help their students become more imaginative and creative in the theatrical world. Students will have the chance to work with the artists and become more effect in the theatrical practice.

The ballroom and athletic field share the same stage as the teachers battle students and tuxes are traded for jerseys on stage.

UNCW invites community to advanced screening of new comedy

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - If you’re interested in getting a sneak peek at a major film coming out in theaters in July 2013, then you will want to make sure you get a ticket to an advanced showing of The Way, Way Back, a comedy starring Steve Carell, Steve Rockwell and Amanda Peet.

The UNCW Honors College wants to invite all campus and community to attend a special advanced screening of the movie Tuesday, April 2.

According to a press release, Academy-Award winners Nat Faxon and Jim Rash are the savvy screenwriters and directors behind the flick, and after the movie plays, they will be discussing their film with the audience.
