Leaders will wait for full report before deciding on SROs

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A professional security company has recommended that School Resource Officers remain in New Hanover County elementary schools, but the recommendation alone is not enough for local leaders.

URS Corp. is in the middle of a complete security audit of the New Hanover County School system, so Superintendent Dr. Tim Markley asked for an early recommendation on SRO's in order to meet budget deadlines.

The recommendation was positive, but Woody White, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners, said leaders will wait for the comprehensive study before putting any money aside.

"It's not acceptable to just throw money at it and say ‘we've solved the problem'," said White. "We had to do that on a temporary basis. The citizens were demanding it."
