Girls Leadership Camp
Grades 6-8

The camp will focus on the development of positive relationships, attaining life skills and setting goals to achieve success.

Apply now for a seat in the Spanish Immersion Program at Forest Hills

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Forest Hills Global Elementary School is accepting applications for its Spanish Immersion Programming for the upcoming 2013-14 school year.

According to a news release, applications will be accepted from families who live outside of the school’s attendance zone for a limited number of seats in the kindergarten class.

The seats will be filled by a lottery process.

“Forest Hills is very excited about the growth of our Spanish Immersion Program,” said Principal Deborah Greenwood in a news release. “We encourage families to consider the unique learning opportunities that the program will offer their kindergarten students. In today’s global society, learning a second language will help to advance a child’s education and future career.”

The deadline to apply is Friday, May 17, 2013.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – There will be an informational meeting for parents and students next week about the Ashley High School Marine Science Academy.

The new program provides a unique college-level experience by offering the equivalent of two introductory marine science courses usually taken during the first college year.

According to the New Hanover County School System, the Academy will prepare the next generation of marine scientists through:

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The Brigade Boys & Girls Club is asking for your vote.

The group has been selected as one of the 200 finalists in the State Farm Neighborhood Assist program. 

The top 40 vote getters will get a $25,000 grant from the insurance company.

Chick-Fil-A hosts mother-son "Date Knight"

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Alright moms, grab your son Thursday night and take him out to a special “Date Knight” at Chick-Fil-A.

Mothers and sons are encouraged to spend some time together while they enjoy dinner, conversations and several special activities.

The event will be held April 18, 4:30-7:30 p.m. with seatings available every hour. Reservations are required. Customers can visit www.mothersondate.com/wilmington to make a reservation.

Students prepare for annual Sidewalk Chalk Art Competition

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The 19th Annual New Hanover County Schools High School Sidewalk Chalk Art Competition will be held this Saturday at Mayfaire Town Center.

Each high school art team will be assigned a corner of Main and Innovation Drives to create their chalk designs.

Students from Ashley, Hoggard, Laney and New Hanover High Schools will have two hours to finish their artwork.

Several middle school art students will also be on hand to watch and create smaller versions of chalk designs.

The winning high school art team will receive the NHCS High School Sidewalk Chalk Art plaque to be displayed at their school for one year.

Students to interact in upcoming STEM Speaks event

Students to interact in upcoming STEM Speaks event

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Engineers and scientist from local industries will visit with students Thursday in at O’Dell Williamson Auditorium on the campus of Brunswick County Community College.

Students from all five Brunswick County high schools, BCC and UNCW will be at the event to learn more about the science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields.

There will be presentations, interactive sessions and lunch at the event, which takes place Thursday, April 18 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.
