Libraries, schools closed on Monday

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) — The New Hanover County offices will be closed on Monday, Sept. 5 for the Labor Day holiday.

The New Hanover County Public Library branches and New Hanover County Schools will also be closed. All classes are cancelled at UNCW and Cape Fear Community College for the holiday as well.

City of Wilmington offices will close for Labor Day

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) — The City of Wilmington’s offices will be closed on Monday, Sept. 5 for the Labor Day holiday.

The Wave Transit bus system will not run, but trash pickup will remain on a regular schedule.

Sewer repairs complete at Lincoln Rd. near Oleander Dr.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) — Cape Fear Public Utility Authority crews have completed emergency repairs to a sewer cave-in on Lincoln Road, near the intersection of Oleander Drive earlier this week.

According to a news release, a portion of Oleander Drive will be shifted to one lane to provide a camera crew safe access to the manhole for video verification.

Drivers in the far right eastbound lane (toward Wrighstville Beach) will be shifted to the left lane immediately after the post office entrance and will shift back to two lanes just past the Lincoln Road intersection.

The shift is only expected to last a few hourse and has been approved by the NCDOT.

Buffalo Wild Wings to donate funds to Wilmington Police, Fire Departments

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) — A dime will be donated to the Wilmington Police and Fire Departments for every traditional wing sold at Buffalo Wild Wings Grill & Bar from Sept. 9 through 11.

“We are always looking for ways to give back to our local community and hopefully help our guests as well,” said Larry Alderson, Buffalo Wild Wings Franchisee in Wilmington, in a news release. “By offering 10¢ per wing sold on our 10 year anniversary weekend to the Wilmington Police and Fire Departments, Buffalo Wild Wings and our guests are supporting our local men and women that risk their life everyday making the Wilmington area a safer and better place to live. We are grateful for the support and loyalty over the past 10 years and want to express our appreciation.”

Restaurants located at 206 Old Eastwood Road and 5533 Carolina Beach Road are participating.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) — Cape Fear Public Utility Authority crews are working to repair a sewer cave-in on Lincoln Road, near the intersection of Oleander Drive.

While the repairs are being made, a portion of Lincoln Road will be closed to through traffic, according to a news release.

Motorists will not be allowed to turn onto Lincoln Road from Oleander Drive and traffic exiting the post office may only turn right on Lincoln. Flaming Amy's Burrito Barn and Men's Warehouse will only be accesible via their Oleander Drive entrances.

Independence Mall to close at 5 p.m. Friday

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) — Independence Mall will close at 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 26 in anticipation of Hurricane Irene.

It will remain closed throughout Saturday and is expected to re-open on Sunday under normal business hours.

“We are making this decision now to allow our employees, merchants and patrons ample time to provide for their personal safety and security,” Helen Lewis, General Manager for Independence Mall, said in a news release.

Visitors spent more than $400 million in New Hanover County last year

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Visitors to New Hanover County spent more than $400 million last year, which was a healthy increase over 2009 spending.

The report comes from the US Travel Association. In all, North Carolina enjoyed more than $17 billion in tourism spending.

The numbers in New Hanover County are up 6.9% over last year.
