HARRISONBURG, Va. – Tyler McSwain allowed two runs over 7 1/3 innings and Drew Farber knocked in three runs on two hits as UNCW topped VCU, 8-5, on Thursday in the Colonial Athletic Association tournament at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The Seahawks (36-20) advanced to a winner's bracket game on Friday at noon and will face the winner of today's Delaware/Hofstra game. VCU (33-24), meanwhile, returns to the field this evening to take on Towson in the final game of the day.
McSwain (9-3) earned the win, allowing eight hits, but walked none and struck out two.
Farber fueled a three-run first inning as UNCW gave McSwain an early cushion. With runners on the corners, Farber lined a double into the left center gap off losing pitcher Heath Dwyer (3-4). The double plated Andrew Cain and Thomas Pope who singled and walked, respectively, earlier in the frame.
VCU answered with a run in the top of the second when Brett Mikionis lined his sixth homer of the season over the wall in left.
Matt Campbell, who finished three hits for the Seahawks, connected on his fifth round tripper of the season with a man on in the fifth as UNCW grabbed a 5-1 lead.
VCU narrowed its deficit to 5-3 in the top of the eighth on an opposite field home run off the bat of Chris Ayers with a man on.
The Seahawks, however, answered with three runs in their half of the eighth to establish an 8-3 lead. Farber plated the first run with a single to right and Corey Dick and Michael Bass both had 2-out RBI singles later in the frame.
VCU tried to rally in the ninth, scoring twice, but reliever Ricky Holden closed it out.
Bill Cullen collected three hits for VCU while Joey Cujas, Ayers and Mikionis had two apiece.
Dwyer allowed six runs, five earned, on eight hits in seven innings of work. He walked three and fanned five.
