Man facing drug charges after crashing car into power pole

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A man is facing drug charges after crashing his car.

According to authorities with the Wilmington Police Department, officials responded to a report of an impaired driver Monday night in the area of Corning Incorporated, near N. College Road.

When they arrived on scene, officers learned that Jason Alan Mathena, 28, struck a power pole after driving erratically.

Officers noticed a strong smell of marijuana coming from Mathena’s vehicle and proceeded to search it, finding a large amount of marijuana, drug paraphernalia and Valium.

Mathena was booked at the New Hanover County Jail under a $6,000 bond, and has been charged with felony possession of marijuana, driving without an operator’s license, possession of schedule IV, and driving while impaired.
