UNCW will host Coastal Entrepreneur Awards on Friday

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) — UNCW will host the 15th annual Coastal Entrepreneur Awards on Friday, May 20 from 7:30-10:30 a.m.

Ten economy-boosting local business owners will reportedly be celebrated and awards will be given out for 11 different categories. The category winners who are nominated for the Coastal Entrepreneur of the Year award are listed below:

  • WellCare
  • Cape Fear Rainwater Solutions
  • Advanced Maintenance
  • LINC
  • Efficient Energy America
  • Frank Deals
  • Flow Sciences
  • Custom Fit Meals

The awards ceremony will be held in the Burney Center at UNCW.

Robbers confront night employee, take cash from Comfort Suites

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) — At approximately 2 a.m. Monday, two men armed with a handgun reportedly confronted a night employee working at the Comfort Suites at 4719 Market Street.

According to Lucy Crockett, the Public Affairs Officer at the Wilmington Police Department, one of the men ordered the employee to open the safe. When she couldn't, the robber demanded money from the cash drawer. The employee was told to lie on the floor and the robbers reportedly took cash before leaving.

One robber was described as wearing a camouflage jacket and dark pants, with some kind of black fabric almost completely covering his face. The second was described as wearing a black sweatshirt, dark pants and what appeared to be a Halloween skull mask over his face.

Wilmington City Council schedules budget work session for Thursday

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) — Wilmington City Council members will have a budget work session at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 19 at City Hall.

According to officials, the council will consider the 2011-12 budget in the council chambers and they are expecting the meeting to be completed by noon.

Wilmington City Council to discuss budget, ABC regulations & Cross City Trail

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) — The Wilmington City Council will meet on Tuesday, May 17 at City Hall.

The meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. and the following agenda items are expected to be discussed:

  • Public hearing on the 2011-12 recommended budget
  • Consideration of a historic preservation ordinance
  • Resolution to establish an interlocal agreement between the Wilmington Police Dept. and the New Hanover County Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) Board to allow two WPD officers the authority to investigate and enforce ABC regulations in the downtown area
  • Resolution on a change to the alignment of the Cross City Trail to build a connector to safely cross Shipyard Blvd

Taylor Cook headed to Naval Academy

Wilmington Christian senior Taylor Cook will play soccer at the Naval Academy next season.

Cook received the appointment to the Academy after a stellar senior season in which he finished as the programs all-time leader in goals (100) and goals in a season (27).

On Tuesday night Cook also became the first player in the history of the Wilmington Christian soccer program to have his jersey number retired.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) — An estimated 1,800 undergraduate and 285 graduate students have officially graduated during the spring 2011 commencement ceremonies at the University of North Carolina Wilmington.

It's your final chance to vote for Anderson student in Doodle 4 Google contest

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) — Today is the final day to vote for an Anderson Elementary School student to win the Doodle 4 Google contest.

Joseph Eugene Miller is one of 40 regional finalists in the contest. The voting is open until 3 p.m. today.

To vote, click here, make sure you’re in the Grades 4-6 tab and select Region 4, “My Galaxy” by Joseph Miller.

Google will reportedly announce the national winner at an awards ceremony in New York on May 19. The winning student will win a $15,000 college scholarship and a $25,000 technology grant towards the establishment of a computer lab or technology programming for their school.
